Realising the necessary culture change among researchers in all disciplines depends upon other stakeholders in the research ecosystem actively playing their parts in supporting and encouraging FAIR practice. FAIRsFAIR - Fostering Fair Data Practices in Europe - aims to supply practical solutions for applying the FAIR data principles throughout the research data life cycle, which can be included in the strategies that research organisations and groups might adopt to enable a FAIR data culture. The project places an emphasis on fostering a FAIR data culture to support the uptake of good practices in making data FAIR.

FAIRsFAIR is organising a half-day workshop at IDCC2020, on how to support the FAIR data culture

The workshop, entitled "Ten things you can do to support the FAIR data culture", will provide findings emerging through all areas of project work including standards and technical interoperability, policy development and harmonisation, as well as data stewardship skills and formal education. Based on our initial year of project activity, this full day workshop will present our emerging recommendations for fostering a FAIR data culture, which can then be adopted in an approach to the uptake of FAIR data practices, and give participants an opportunity to help shape these for piloting in years two and three of the project.

During the workshop, practical recommendations will be shared in relation to:

  • Improving the interoperability of FAIR objects
  • Increasing the production and use of FAIR data
  • Building networks of Trusted Digital Repositories and supporting their certification
  • Fostering data stewardship skills development
  • Embedding FAIR data education into university programmes
During the workshop, we will briefly present the emerging recommendations and there will be ample time for participants to discuss areas where additional support might be needed to put the recommendations into practice and to consider how best this support might be provided – both via FAIRsFAIR and other relevant initiatives.
