Open science is the movement to make scientific research (including publications, data, physical samples, and software) and its dissemination accessible to all levels of an inquiring community, amateur or professional. It allows an easier access to scientific inputs and outputs, thus improving the effectiveness and productivity of the research system. Open science fosters progress and innovation, benefiting the society as a whole, namely citizens and both the public and the private sectors.
In order to enable open science, it is crucial that there is open access (mechanism by which research outputs are distributed online, free of cost or other access barriers), open data (data that anyone can access, use and share) and open-source software (denoting software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be redistributed and modified). In the last few decades, the usage of digital tools for research in modern science, namely software and services, increased greatly. However, most of the code that is written was focused on a specific scientific investigation. Despite all the effort that goes into these indispensable tools, the fruits of that work are rarely shared with other scientists afterwards.
Currently, there is no single repository available for the closely related scientific fields of astrophysics, astroparticle physics and particle physics, which is supporting the full potential of science discoveries in this sector.
The Open-source scientific Software and Service Repository (OSSR) will be a central open-access repository that provides software and services to enable open science, developed by world-leading research infrastructures and institutions in the fields of astrophysics, astroparticle physics and particle physics. Furthermore, the ESCAPE OSSR aims to disseminate test data sets, user-support documentation, tutorials, presentations and training activities.
The ESCAPE OSSR aims to enable a true multi-messenger-driven cooperative approach based on the FAIR principles requirements and will become part of the EOSC global catalogue of services. Services will be openly available to the community, allowing users to access multi-messenger and multi-domain software to mine open-access datasets. Cross-fertilisation and open innovation are the main benefits of this catalogue for an interoperable science and software re-usage.
ESCAPE OSSR fosters the creation of new solutions in the astrophysics, astroparticle physics, particle physics and adjacent scientific fields, by allowing a high quality, well document and easy-to-use software solutions, shared in a harmonised way.
