ESCAPE VO IS CONNECTING ESFRI AND OTHER ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPARTICLE RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURES TO THE EOSC THROUGH THE VIRTUAL OBSERVATORY FRAMEWORK.

According to the ESFRI Roadmap  “astronomy has pioneered a global framework for FAIR data sharing”. The astronomical Virtual Observatory (VO) is the international data sharing framework which enables data to be FAIR - Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Re-usable for the astronomers’ needs. The vision is that astronomical datasets and other resources should work together as a seamless whole to support multi-wavelength and multi-messenger astrophysics. Today the VO is an operational system where many hundreds of all-sky data sets are accessed from VO services around the world. The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is being built as a federated ecosystem of research data infrastructures that will allow the scientific community to share and process publicly funded research results and data across borders and scientific domains, and the FAIR principles are a central part of this new dynamic of open data sharing. The ESCAPE project is making the connection of the astronomical Virtual Observatory to EOSC. The aim is to  enable the ESFRI and other astronomy and astroparticle research infrastructures to provide FAIR data services in the EOSC for all researchers to benefit. The VO framework is built on common interoperability standards that are defined at the global level by the International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA ). ESCAPE VO supports the participation of ESFRI and other RIs in IVOA to ensure the development, update and implementation of the necessary interoperability standards. Stay tuned for upcoming events aimed at early career researchers for training and hands-on use of VO tools and services for your science use cases. Also, training workshops aimed at the community of European data providers for the use of VO for publishing data and services.
