ESCAPE SAP: A PLATFORM FOR DATA ANALYSIS INTO EOSC, TAILORED TO THE ESCAPE ESFRI REQUIREMENTS

The approach to data has drastically changed over the past two decades, with researchers accessing to more data and larger volumes of data than ever before. Thanks to the continuous development of more powerful technologies and tools, the volume of data collected by Astronomy and Particle physics scientists that needs to be processed and analysed is increasing rapidly, allowing researchers to make extraordinary new scientific discoveries with these new data.

Unfortunately, this is not always easy, since not all researchers have access to the storage space and computing resources needed to process and analyse this enormous increasing amount of data, creating a bottleneck in society’s scientific discoveries potential.

The ESCAPE project seeks to change that with the ESCAPE Science Analysis Platform (SAP), an infrastructure (both hardware and software) that provides not only the access and combination of data from multiple collections, but also software that allows this data to be processed and analysed.

With the ESCAPE SAP we want to help scientists get access to both data and processing without having to worry about where data is stored and how it is brought to the compute systems for processing and analysis. This is taken care of by the SAP and will allow the scientists to focus on the analysis and interpretation of the data. - Michiel van Haarlem (ASTRON), leader of ESCAPE SAP team

ESCAPE SAP is a platform that will allow researchers to identify and stage existing open access data for processing and analysis, allowing data discovery and handling of large and geographically distributed data collections. Using the ESCAPE SAP, researchers will be able to tap into a wide range of software tools and packages developed by and in support of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructure (ESFRIs), bring their own custom workflows to the platform, and take advantage of the underlying high performance computing infrastructure to execute those workflows.

Another added value of the ESCAPE SAP is that it allows researchers to combine, study and process telescope, detector and accelerator data from related disciplines, fostering new hidden insights and potential scientific discoveries out of these data. This enhances the impact of research science, by providing cross-domain working solutions that are applicable across multidisciplinary fields.

SUPPORTING SCIENCE PROFESSIONALS TOWARD A GLOBAL OPEN SCIENCE

To allow the entire scientific community to benefit from its capabilities, ESCAPE will make the ESCAPE SAP Platform available through the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) Catalogue of Services. Thanks to the ESCAPE SAP, EOSC Researchers will be able to identify and stage existing data collections for analysis, tap into a wide-range of software tools and packages developed by the ESFRIs, bring their own custom workflows to the platform, and take advantage of the underlying High Performance Computing and High-Throughput Computing infrastructure to execute those workflows.
