The Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (Heidelberger Institut für Theoretische Studien - HITS) is a private, non-profit research institute. HITS conducts basic research in the natural sciences, mathematics, and computer science, with a focus on the processing, structuring and analyzing large amounts of data. The research fields range from molecular biology to astrophysics. The participating group focuses on research in the field of Astroinformatics, the intersection between astronomy and applied computer science and is specialized in machine learning, large-scale data exploration and e-science infrastructure development.
